Live concert: Quartet Nouveau

The “Pleasure of Your Company” music series, sponsored by the Scripps Ranch Friends of the Library, welcomes back Quartet Nouveau, performing live on Sunday, May 13, at 2:30 p.m. in the informal and intimate setting of the Scripps Miramar Ranch Library Center.

Violinists Batya MacAdam-Somer and Missy Lukin, violist Annabelle Terbetski and cellist Elizabeth Brown combine to form an exciting, dynamic ensemble. Their program will include Beethoven’s String Quartet Op. 59 No. 1, the Third String Quartet by Elena Ruehr, and Fantasia on ‘Shenandoah’ by Rick Sowash.

Known for its fresh approach to classical music with performances that elicit emotional responses from audiences, Quartet Nouveau is ensemble in residence with the California Chamber Orchestra.

Originally from New York, Annabelle Terbetski began playing the viola at age 8 and received her bachelor's degree in Music Education and Performance from Ithaca College. She earned her master's degree in Viola Performance from Florida State University and a master's degree in Chamber Music from Kent State University. Terbetski is an avid chamber musician who freelances around San Diego and teaches privately. She is currently adjunct viola faculty at Point Loma Nazarene University.

Born in Mesa, Arizona, Missy Lukin started playing the violin at age 4 and attended Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music. Her post-graduate work was at the Cleveland Institute of Music. She has performed with the Cleveland Orchestra San Antonio Symphony, the Dallas Symphony, Opera Pacific Orchestra, the Pacific Symphony, the San Diego Symphony, at the Mainly Mozart Festival Orchestra, and at the Sun Valley Summer Symphony.

Elizabeth Brown, a native of San Diego, served as the principal cellist of the Orquesta Sinfonica Sinaloa de las Artes in Sinaloa, Mexico, from 2005 to 2014. In addition to her orchestral experience, she has worked as a soloist, a chamber musician and a cello instructor in Europe, the United States and Mexico. She earned both her B.M. and M.M. in Cello Performance from the Eastman School of Music. Brown currently teaches cello at the University of San Diego.

Batya MacAdam-Somer began her college studies at the Moores School of Music, University of Houston, at the age of 16, then went on to earn a BA from the Manhattan School of Music and completed her MA and DMA at UCSD. She has participated in the Lucerne Festival Academy, Aspen Summer Music Festival, International Festival Institute at Round Top and the Bach Festival of Leipzig, Germany. MacAdam-Somer coaches weekly at Mira Mesa High School, teaches for the San Diego Youth Symphony’s Opus program and coaches chamber music for its Conservatory program.
